I broke my ankle and lower leg earlier this year and as a result I have quite a bit of hardware in my ankle area. This makes it larger and more sensitive. I am going to the Christmas Markets on the Danube in December and need a waterproof shoe, not a boot because of my ankle. Any tips?

Thank you for this post! I used this as a guide to find the right shoes for my trip to Finland back in February. The Joan of Arc was extremely bulky and HEAVY for carry on travel and even to walk in, so I returned those. The Columbia Omni-snow ended up being perfect though! Easy to pack, easy to put on, comfortable, and no bulkiness : ). Wore with Merino wool socks. Will wear these for all of my snow adventures.

I love the suggestions. I always struggle with pants – so I go skinny and have them inside the boots? Look for bootleg or flare and go outside?
Would love to se pictures if not just the boots, but complete travel outfits with the boots. That would be so helpful!

During the Nordstrom sale you recommended Blondo waterproof ankle boots. Who knew suede could be waterproof? Bought them for an upcoming trip to U.K. & Ireland. Love them! Comfortable and great looking. I highly recommend them.

In reply to Elle Croft. That's true. In Italy and Spain it seemed as if the shoes were made for cobblestones. Cotswold and other outdoor shops to carry similar styles including the Teva and North Face. Stop by next time you see one :-)

I love those Timberland ones – they look warm, practical and cute which is a rare combination. I think as well as being warm and waterproof, it’s so important to find boots with really good grip. I’ve found it really hard to get these in the UK but on mainland Europe they make their shoes with much more practical soles. I’ve spent far too many weekends in snowy destinations slipping & sliding on icy cobblestones. It’s just not worth it!
